Good evening, little lanterns.

You have perhaps seen me at the edge of a page, or heard my paws before you noticed my name.

That is all right.

Foxes are not offended by being discovered slowly.

There is a habit among travelers to believe that every crossroads demands an immediate choice. I have wandered long enough to know that this is rarely so.

Sometimes the wisest step is to sit upon a moss-covered stone and listen until the forest remembers your name.

Do not hurry your becoming.

The oak does not apologize for taking a century.

The river does not apologize for bending around the mountain.

The stars do not apologize for arriving only after sunset.

Why should you?

If you have come to this little community seeking certainty, I have none to sell.

If you have come seeking companions for the road, then perhaps we have already met.

There are many kinds of courage.

Some climb mountains.

Some speak truth.

Some begin again.

And some simply remain gentle after the world has given them every excuse not to be.

Do not underestimate the last.

When you encounter a stranger, imagine for one quiet moment that they are carrying an invisible lantern.

You cannot see its flame.

They cannot always see yours.

Yet the road grows brighter because both are walking.

If ever you feel lost, do not search first for the loudest voice.

Search for the smallest light that has not gone out.

Follow that.

It is almost always enough.

Until we meet upon another path—

May your questions remain alive.

May your laughter remain untamed.

May your hearth always leave one chair empty for the unexpected guest.

And should you glimpse a fox where no fox ought to be…

Do not chase him.
